Post Grape-Nuts has been a part of American breakfasts for more than a century. C.W. Post established Postum Cereal Company in 1895. Postum Cereal rolled out Grape-Nuts two years later in 1897. As most cereal consumers probably have noticed, there are no grapes in Grape-Nuts. The cereal was named after the “grape sugar,” also known as sucrose, used to hold together the nuggets of barley and whole grain wheat.Post Grape-Nuts contains 33 grams of whole grains in each serving, and is a popular choice for consumers trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle. In the 1950s, famed explorer Edmund Hillary even brought along Grape-Nuts when he climbed to the summit of Mt. Everest.
While Grape-Nuts remains the oldest variety of cereal produced by Post, the company also manufactures other healthy favorites such as Honey Bunches of Oats and Shredded Wheat, along with sweetened cereals such as Fruity Pebbles and Cocoa Pebbles. C.W. Post was one of the first manufacturers to actively market his product with promotions such as coupons, free samples and recipe booklets. Post would probably applaud the online Honey Bunches of Oats coupons and Fruity Pebbles coupons offered on the Internet today.
During the 1920s, the name of the parent company of Postum Cereal was changed to the General Food Corporation. The company continued to expand, and introduced Fruity Pebbles and Cocoa Pebbles in 1971. General Foods marketed the new cereal with popular animated characters found on the television show “The Flintstones.” After a series of acquisitions, General Foods eventually merged with Kraft Foods to form Kraft General Foods in 1990.
