Cap’n Crunch cereal, sometimes referred to as Captain Crunch cereal, set sail on its maiden voyage to cereal bowls in 1963. Pamela Low created the cereal from a recipe with butter and brown sugar that her grandmother used to serve over rice. Low is credited as the “mother of Cap’n Crunch” for her invention marketed by the Quaker Oats Company. The cereal is now available in several flavors, including Crunch Berries and Chocolatey Crunch.Animator Jay Ward created the cartoon character of Cap’n Crunch as part of the cereal’s initial campaign. Jay Ward is also known as the genius behind the subversively funny “Rocky & Bullwinkle” cartoons, which initially aired from 1959 to 1963 on NBC and ABC. Cap’n Crunch fans will be interested to know the hungry sea captain does have a full name of Horatio Magellan Crunch. The moniker could be a nod to seafaring explorer Ferdinand Magellan, as well as the fictional Navy captain Horatio Hornblower featured in a series of 20th-century novels.
Cap’n Crunch appeals to the younger demographic, and the cereal can be served over ice cream as a crunchy topping as well as for breakfast. In 2010, Cap’n Crunch generated $118.6 million in sales for PepsiCo, which bought the Quaker Oats Company in 2001.
However, PepsiCo is a member of the Children's Food and Beverage Advertising Initiative, which attempts to ensure children younger than the age of 12 view advertisements for healthy products. As a result, the company has scaled back on advertising Cap’n Crunch, and Quaker Oats does not even list it as a brand on their corporate website. However, ie-hard fans can still save money on Cap’n Crunch with online Cap’n Crunch coupons.
One serving of Cap’n Crunch original cereal contains 12 grams of sugar, but also has zero grams of trans fat per serving. The cereal is enriched with seven vitamins and minerals, but still ranks near the top of least-nutritious breakfast cereals.

Back in 2007, Cap’n Crunch was the number one pre-sweetened cold cereal aimed at children, but the Cap’n has found stormy weather since then as parents turn to healthier options for breakfast. Like any good pirate, parents can hoard more of their cash with Cheerios coupons and Cinnamon Toast Crunch coupons.
